Make no mistake, nothing has a greater impact on the outcome of a criminal charge than the lawyer that you hire to defend you. When you hire Kaysi Fagan, you hire an award-winning lawyer who has successfully defended criminal prosecutions in every level of court in Canada, including the Supreme Court of Canada. You hire a lawyer who has been described by one magazine as “unafraid to engage in battle” and by another as having “built her reputation on merit”. Those who hire Ms. Fagan have in their corner a lawyer with a track record of doing everything possible, within the parameters of ethical and professional obligations, to secure a win. Whether you are facing a minor theft charge, or a highly publicized first-degree murder charge, your first step is to call Kaysi Fagan so that you can approach the allegations against you from a position of strength.
Ms. Fagan is a recognized expert in the field of criminal law. Formerly based at the headquarters of the International Police (INTERPOL), she is the only practicing criminal defence lawyer in Canada with three law degrees (including two masters) from three different countries. She has been a sessional instructor at the University of Calgary, Faculty of Law since 2018, exclusively teaching “Advanced Criminal Law” to the next generation of aspiring criminal lawyers. She is a Faculty member with the Law Society of Alberta who teaches other lawyers. She has lectured high-ranking members of the RCMP Major Crimes division on the importance of the constitutional “right to counsel”. She is, in short, a sought-after educator.
Ms. Fagan knows that while you are awaiting trial the sheer existence of criminal allegations can impact your everyday life and she fights to ensure that her clients are not treated as “guilty until proven innocent”. For example, she has successfully negotiated with a University Board of Directors to reinstate a student suspended following the laying of serious criminal charges; she has successfully appealed the suspension of driver’s licenses following criminal driving allegations; and has advocated for the return to work of those who have unfairly lost their employment as a consequence of criminal charges.
Ms. Fagan has a diverse practice defending any and all criminal charges under the Criminal Code of Canada and the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act – no charge is too big or too small and payment plans are available. She has defended drug prosecutions from personal possession of low-level drugs, to the largest heroin importation seizure in Canada; allegations of simple assault to complex first degree murder charges; from small thefts to multi-million dollar frauds and all sexual and domestic assault allegations. In addition to her base in Calgary, Ms. Fagan has been retained to defend prosecutions across Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Ontario and the Northwest Territories. She has been called to the Bar in both Alberta and British Columbia and is conversational in both French and Spanish.
Ms. Fagan has an established track record of achievement spanning decades.
Her career in criminal law began at the headquarters of the International Police Organization (INTERPOL) in Lyon, France. Upon her return to Canada she trained under Patrick C. Fagan Q.C. who was described by the Calgary Herald as being “one of the most respected lawyers in the province”. In 2012 Ms. Fagan was named as one of Avenue Magazine’s Top 40 Under 40 stating that it was her goal to build her reputation “one win at a time”. It is a goal that continues to serve her clients today.
In 2013 she was described on the front page of Calgary Herald City section as a “bright young star in the Calgary criminal defence bar.” In 2018 she was the only Criminal Defence Lawyer featured in the first edition of Know magazine, which showcases Calgary’s female “leaders and high producers”. She was described as a “woman that you want in your corner”. Ms. Fagan often provides legal commentary in the news, having appeared in print, on the radio and on television. She has been retained as a legal expert for multiple episodes of a popular American true crime television series and is a published author who the Toronto Star in a review of her work described as “very determined”.
As a student, she was recipient of multiple awards and scholarships including the “Governor General’s Gold Medal for Highest Cumulative Academic Standing”, “Student of the Year” and “Woman of the Year”. She was the only Canadian selected for entrance into an intensive double masters program at New York University and graduated with Honours in respect of all three of her law degrees. Ms. Fagan is also a former trained fire fighter who competed internationally in the World Championships and attained her black prajiet (belt) in Muay Thai in 2012.
